Plant Chromatography for Kids

Leaf Photo for Autumn Lesson Plans

Found this on a US site brilliant resources for kids this autumn:
What started out as a food science experiment turned into a seasonal one this morning, and we ended up outside pulling leaves off our Maple tree to see how the pigments from a red leaf would compare to those from a green one. Liquid chromatography allows you to separate the pigments (molecules that give plants color) using paper as a solid medium for the molecules to travel up, and alcohol as the solvent that separates and carries the pigments up the paper at different speeds, depending on how large they are. Art Active in Suffolk

September 10, 2012

Artactive SEN teaching resources

ArtActiv is service provider delivering stimulating and challenging activities to help children and young people with impairments to discover their creative potential. Set in the beautiful heart of Suffolk on the Thornham Estate, ArtActiv offers the perfect location for a weeekend break for kids to participate in various creative arts, cross-curricular indoor and outdoor activities. It has accessible log cabins suitable for groups of up to 25 to stay over (the beds are really comfy too!).

I took a small group there over the weekend and we had a ball! The art making activities were great fun but the boys particularly enjoyed foraging for fire wood in the nearby copse. This lead to a gold-mine of cross-curricular conversations! Science and Literacy were the big winners; “foraging” “carbon capture” “exploring” “gathering”. These are kids with limited vocabulary and the outdoor resources offered by Artactive were the perfect triggers! Big thumps up from me! Here’s their addres: Artactive in Suffolk

Lesson Plans for Autumn Term

Lesson Plans for Autumn Term

Find the time this Autumn…

Finding the time to plan lessons is only one obstacle I face climbing the crumbly chalk face of afterschool time. Once at the top, it can be stressful and soooo time-consuming!!! Getting the lesson objectives to match the curriculum and differentiating for all and sundry – sometimes I long for life on a trawler!

With September only a sneeze away (I haven’t had a cold all summer – thank you Pupils) I need a long-term positive strategy, a spoonful of ZEN or new psychological armour – not just the coffee-scaffold – to gear up my mind into a positive Sir Chris Hoy sprint through the following year.

So what have I done to achieve this? After a summer with hours spent on social media (rain or shine)  I followed a link to TES Lesson Plans and realised that, for this autumn term I am going to make more time for myself.  You can download lesson plans are free! Some have been rated by stars 1 to 5 (5 = tops), all have been added by teachers. I know other staff have talked about TES but its taken time to sieve through

There are also guides on lesson design and principles which can be used in conjunction with the lesson plan PowerPoint. Time for another cup of tea !
